Grotesqueries continue turning death metal even more macabre on burly EP ‘Nightmare Delirium’

I can’t imagine getting your face carved up is a very pleasurable experience, but death metal that makes it feel like that just happened IS. Brutality and punishment doled out in equal helpings provide a great way to distract you from the actual horrors going on outside our doors, which is something Grotesqueries knock the fuck out.

Initially a project helmed solely by founder Yianni Tranxidis (vocals, drums), he teams with Anthony Paulini (Coffin Birth/Gravewraith) on guitar and bass on a new four-track EP “Nightmare Delirium,” and it’s a bruising appetizer for what they do next. This piece expands upon debut “Vile Crematory” and the devastation presented there, and the Cannibal Corpse cover at the end also gives you a hammering way end this display.

“Terrorforming” rips open, trucking mercilessly, the growls pummeling as the pace churns. Leads sizzle and blister as the power engulfs, the soloing floods, and the howls ensnare, jolting and fluttering away. “The Crowning of Spinning Steel” entangles and destroys, the growls gut, and the playing mashes muscle. The chaos dusts up as the drums land harder, the guitars racing and crunching, blistering even harder. The tempo explodes and wrecks, the guitars blind, and the final moments smother. “Corporeal Purulence” comes unglued right away, smearing as the growls lash, structures toppling, a full death crush splattering guts. Howls smash as the leads tear, the band thrashes heavily, and the energy carves into flesh and bone. The close is their cover of Cannibal Corpse’s “Gutted” from 1991’s “Butchered at Birth,” and they add muscle and a different level of insanity to the track, pulverizing hard and putting their stamp on a death metal classic.

Grotesqueries not only expand their ranks on “Nightmare Delirium,” they also remind that their tools are sharp as fuck and they’re more than willing to mete out a battering. The three new tracks give a quick glimpse into where their violent tendencies are headed and put your face to the pavement. This is a quick crusher that draws blood and slams the door.
